Event Description:
Please join us for a full-day workshop on Historic Preservation Maintenance featuring nationally known masonry and timber expert, Mark Liebman, and nationally recognized historic preservation residential expert, Bob Yapp. These speakers will have you laughing as they teach you about proper maintenance of historic structures. This workshop is open to the public. Cost for this full-day workshop is $20, which includes a buffet lunch, drinks, and snacks. Sign up early, as space is limited. Main Workshop Schedule: Friday, April 11, 2014 American Legion, Lysle Rishel Post 730 West 4th Avenue Hutchinson, Kansas 67501 7:45 Registration 8:00am - 8:50am Maintenance of Historic Buildings Kim Gant, Kansas Historical Society Slide presentation that includes an overview of historic building maintenance 9:00am - 10:30am Preservation Doesn't Cost - It Pays Bob Yapp, Preservation Resources This fun and dynamic talk takes participants through the economic benefits of historic preservation. 10:45am - 11:45am Passive Wood Floor Restoration Bob Yapp, Preservation Resources Demonstration of passive wood floor preservation techniques, as well as repairs. Residential Tracks 12:45am - 2:15pm Paint it Right! Bob Yapp, Preservation Resources How to get a 12-15 year, cost effective paint job for your historic house. You can hire it, never lift a finger and do it twice in 24 - 30 years for about the same price of a competent vinyl siding job that will last 15 years. 2:20pm - 3:20pm Old Windows Aren't a Pane - They're a Gold Mine Bob Yapp, Preservation Resources A primer on how to cost effectively repair/restore and make old windows as or more energy efficient than replacement windows. Commercial Tracks 12:45pm - 2:15pm Repointing Brick Exteriors Mark Liebman, Case Forensics This interactive session provides attendees with a basic knowledge of repointing and the do's and don'ts of brick preservation. 2:20pm - 3:20pm Shiver Me Timbers Mark Liebman, Case Forensics A session on maintaining, preserving and rehabilitating wood floors, joints and beams. Bob Yapp, Preservation Resources, has dedicated his career to community planning, central city revitalization, historic preservation and woodworking. Bob has been involved in the restoration and rehabilitation of more than 150 historic properties, many of them award winning. He has had his own newspaper column and has hosted a public radio program, “About Your House with Bob Yapp”. He presently operates and teaches at “The Belvedere School for Hands-On Preservation” in Hannibal, Missouri and has traveled throughout the U.S. giving keynote speeches, seminars and workshops on historic preservation. Mark Liebman, Case Forensics, has provided forensic investigation and restoration consulting services for the past 25 years. He is experienced with a diverse array of materials, with a professional focus in historic masonry. Mark has worked on restoration projects from coast to coast, including such projects as the Washington State Legislature Building and the St. Jude Church in Miami, Florida. A published author, Mark has also made presentations to various groups, including the ISRM Commission for Preservation of Ancient Sites, in Stockholm, Sweden (2012) and the Kansas State Preservation Conference (2010).
Directions:
The workshop will take place at the American Legion Post, 730 West 4th Avenue, in Hutchinson, Kansas. The American Legion Post is located 4 blocks west of Main Street on the north side of 4th Avenue. Parking is available on site.
