Event Description:
The Hutchinson Art Association invites you to attend the artist reception for Thomas Pecore Weso whose exhibit of paintings “NORTWEST SHAMAN” is on display at the Hutchinson Art Center. 405 N. Washington St. The reception will take place on Friday, January 11th, from 5:00pm-7:00pm; the paintings will be on display from January 11th to February 2nd. The event is free and the public is invited.
When taking in the images created by Thomas Pecore Weso ones consciousness is apt to feel ajar, as if not on familiar sensory turf. Color and perspective coupled with Native American symbols and surreal landscapes are used by the artist to decorate liminal states in which the viewer senses they are apart from more familiar realties. Tom hints at this in his artist statement saying “My painting explores my identity. Everything I do is “Indian” art whether it is obvious or not. Landscapes are important to me, because Native identity is tied to the land. A landscape has its own spirit; it is neither dead nor alive, and the presence of land adds spirituality to a painting…My maternal grandfather and uncles taught me my overall outlook, which is visible in these paintings. I accompanied my grandfather to Native American Church services, where I learned the presence of visionary realities.”
Please stop by Friday to view Tom’s paintings and meet the artist. Don’t forget to visit our web-site at www.hutchinsonsrtcenter.org to stay abreast of what’s going on at HAC or call 620/663-1081 for more information.
